Downtown market on hold

Vernon’s downtown market is on hold for the moment, while city council seeks a survey of businesses that front the four-block stretch of 30th Avenue, from 30th to 34th streets.

“I know three or four businesses that have suffered as a result of the market,” said Coun. Catherine Lord.

But Coun. Scott Anderson sees it differently. “I don’t see this as competition. It actually brings people into the downtown,” he said Monday.

“There are businesses that are not happy,” acknowledged Coun. Brian Quiring, who is also on the Downtown Vernon Association board. “There have been steps taken to address some of the issues, going from 21 markets to 15 and reorganizing the market. There have been positive steps taken.”

“I appreciate council’s concern, but it’s disappointing they would come back a second year in a row for another survey,” said Lara Konkin, the DVA's executive director.

“We surveyed before and after last year’s Avenue Market, and we had over 90 per cent support every time. I’m confident it’s not a challenge.”

A motion to allow a road closure from 3 to 9 p.m. on Fridays starting on June 12 has been deferred to council's April 13 meeting.

The city will consider allowing the road closure if there is 60 per cent or greater support from downtown businesses.
