Vernonites soaked for water

A citizen’s group says Vernon residents are getting hosed when it comes to water rates.

Citizens for Changes to the Master Water Plan told city council Monday that Vernon water users pay $900 a year for an average 350 cubic metres usage versus $292 in Kelowna and $422 in Penticton.

“Water rates have tripled since 2003 and doubled in the past four years. It’s time for a fresh new look at the master water plan,” said Eric Jackson spokesman for the group.

“The Duteau Creek water treatment plant is very expensive, and 96 per cent of the water is being used for agriculture irrigation. Kalamalka and Okanagan Lake are much better sources.”

Jackson notes it’s not just homeowners bearing the brunt of the dramatic increases.

He said Hillview Golf Course is drilling a well in order to stay in business, as the course's 2015 city water bill would be $43,500 based on past usage. That compares to $6,000 for Summerland Golf Club and $12,000 for Gallagher’s Canyon in Kelowna.

“We will be seeking public input at the regional district and will proceed in a methodic way,” said Coun. Juliette Cunningham.

The current master water plan which called for $17 million in additional expenditures was defeated in last November’s municipal vote.
