Dog park to be fenced

A fence to keep soccer players and dogs apart at Vernon’s Marshall Fields could be going up soon.

The Regional District of North Okanagan has budgeted $32,000 for fencing on the north and west sides of the park in Okanagan Landing.

The plan still needs to go before the Greater Vernon Advisory Committee.

With the start of youth soccer not too far off, there has been some concern about the potential of dog attacks with so many young people in the vicinity.

There have been incidents at Marshall field in the past and dog feces on playing fields.

“Lots of people would like to see all parks dog friendly, including beaches,” said John Friesen, with Regional District of North Okanagan bylaw enforcement. “Kal lake is a drinking water source, and lots of families use the beach. Dogs are not permitted on Kal or Kin beach.”

Vernon's most popular dog parks are B.X., Mutrie and Mission Hill. In all, there are 18 dog parks in Greater Vernon, including five off-leash parks where canines can run freely.
