Horses herded to good homes

By all accounts, it was a successful sale at Valley Auctions in the North Okanagan.

Roughly 85 horses were part of a court-ordered sale last weekend to buyers from all over Western Canada.

Auction owner Peter Raffan says it was a very good turnout – more than expected.

“It was a very successful sale, and they all sold," he says.

“They all went to good homes, every single one of them.”

He believes the horses averaged about $1,100 each, with all money going back to Gary Roberts, the man accused of mistreating animals at his farm in Armstrong.

Roberts now faces two counts of animal cruelty and one count of uttering threats.

Last year, the SPCA seized 16 emaciated horses from his property. A court order forced him to sell his remaining herd, but he is allowed to keep the funds from the sale.

“The whole object of the sale was to rehome the horses to good homes, and that’s where they went,” said Raffan.
