Suspicious dumpster fire

Last year, Vernon was plagued with suspicious fire after suspicious fire. Now, for the first time this year, another has been lit.

On Saturday at 6:45 p.m., Vernon fire crews were called to a small dumpster fire in the 2300 block of 36th Avenue.

“Indications are that cardboard had been set on fire in the dumpster,” explains RCMP Spokesman Gord Molendyk. “Several people noticed the fire, but did do not know how it started.”

Despite its suspicious nature, Deputy Chief Jack Blair says it does not align with the rest of the fires last year and the department does not believe it is attached to the mystery arsons of 2014.

Molendyk says there are no suspects in the case so far, and police are checking for any video surveillance in the area.

There was no significant damage as the fire was small and crews were able to put it out right away.
