New grace period for meters

If you've forgotten to plug your meter in Vernon, you will now have a few more minutes to rush back to your car.

The new five-minute grace period instituted by city council this week will now give drivers a little more leeway when it comes to avoiding those pesky parking tickets.

This new grace period will go above and beyond the two minutes that drivers are currently given in the downtown core. These new changes will cost the city $3,200, which has already been approved by council, for the meters to be reprogrammed.

“The grace period, once in effect, will actually provide for a minimum six-minute grace period that includes the time it takes for a bylaw compliance officer to write a ticket,” explains Communications Director Tanya Laing Gahr.

“If the vehicle owner returns before the ticket is completed, the officer has the ability to cancel the ticket.”

Parking violations currently provide over $225,000 per year in revenue to the City of Vernon.

They say while the difference the extended grace period will make to revenue is unknown, Bylaw Compliance Manager Clint Kanester estimates a possible five per cent reduction on ticket production, equaling approximately $11,250 based on 2014 statistics.
