Arrest made in standoff

A man finally gave himself up early Tuesday morning after a five-hour standoff with police in Vernon.

The call came in at about 10:15 p.m. on Monday night. A man was said to be destroying a basement in the 3900 block of 21st Ave.

When officers responded they found three people outside the residence, and a small hallway piled with broken furniture inside the home.

A 33-year-old man had barricaded himself inside and would not allow police to access the basement. The suspect then uttered threats about lighting the house on fire, as well as threatening officers with a knife and throwing several objects.

Officers also observed the man breaking chairs and furniture, and punching several holes in the drywall. After several hours of negotiations, the man surrendered two knives and was taken into custody at approximately 3:05 a.m.

The suspect was taken to hospital for treatment and police are requesting an assessment of his mental health.

Police are recommending charges of uttering threats, mischief, and possessing a weapon for a dangerous purpose.
