Daytime drunk drivers

Impaired drivers don't only come out at night.

A Westside Road traffic stop on Sunday morning netted three impaired drivers between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m.

RCMP spokesperson Gord Molendyk says even early in the day police are actively looking for not only drunk drivers, but those impaired by drugs.

"What people don't think about is that impaired drivers are on the road 24 hours a day," says Molendyk.  "We have several officers in our detachment area that have been trained for drug observation and drug impairment."

Molendyk says something people may not realize is if they drink late into the evening and decide not to drive, they can still be legally impaired the next morning.

"Depending on the level of intoxication, it takes a long time to get down to the legal limit to drive."

The traffic stop was set up by the North and Central Okanagan RCMP traffic sections on Westside Road near Vernon from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. In addition to the three impaired drivers police found several people who were prohibited from driving, as well as stolen property and small quantities of drugs.
