Murder charge in shooting

A Lumby man has been charged with second-degree murder following an incident on June 19, 2014.

Howard Everett is believed to have shot 51-year-old Linda Marie Stewart last Thursday. He was scheduled to make his first court appearance this morning, but is still recovering in hospital from a self inflicted gunshot wound.

Neighbours at the time said they heard a single gunshot and went to investigate. When they heard a second shot, they called police.

The shooting apparently was the culmination of a dispute between the female owner of the property and a male tenant, according to witnesses.

Stewart was a resident of Lumby who worked as a school teacher in Vernon.

The Southeast District Major Crime Unit, with assistance from North Okanagan Detachment General Investigation Section, and the BC Coroners Service, continue to investigate.

Anyone with any information who has yet to speak with police are asked to contact the Vernon RCMP at 250-545-7171
