BC's new teen rodeo queen

The North Okanagan has new royalty in town as an Armstrong highschool student was crowned Miss BC Highschool Rodeo Queen.

17-year-old Alysha Pastor who lives in Silver Creek and attends highschool in Armstrong reigned supreme at the BC Highschool Rodeo Championships held in Falkland last weekend.

To become the rodeo queen Pastor had to compete against other top BC rodeo talent in the province in several challenges.

“You must give a 2-minute speech, you are asked an impromptu question on the spot, for the entire weekend you are judged on your appearance and personality, you must do a written test on the rulebook of the society and there is also a personal interview with the five judges,” explains Pastor.

She says she is very excited to represent BC at the National Highschool Rodeo Association (NHRA) finals this July in Wyoming. She will compete against 50 other regional queens for the leather throne.

“The rodeo is just one of my favourite things and it is something I grew up around so I just find it really cool and it is something I really enjoy and I just love working with animals,” she says.

Pastor, along with two other locals, Tyler Cooper from Vernon and Cole Churchill from Falkland, qualified in several events and get to represent BC at the nationals.

“You compete against Americans, Canadians and Australians. Only the top four people from each province in each event go and it is the world's largest rodeo,” shared an excited Pastor.

Pastor says rodeo is a huge part of her life, she starting riding at 6-years-old and has been an avid rodeo competitor for six years.

“It is a huge part of my life, highschool rodeo starts in the fall and ends in the spring so we have five rodeos in the fall and six in the spring. There are about 80-girls I compete against so to make it to nationals is very difficult,” says Pastor.

She adds that rodeo kids do not miss much school as competitions are usually on weekends and that report cards are handed in to prove they are passing all of their classes

The NHSRA Finals takes place July 10 – July 19 in Rock Springs, Wyoming.
