64 yr. old dies in crash

UPDATE JUNE 6 11:30 A.M. - The BC Coroners Service have identified the man killed in Wednesday's head-on collision on Highway 97 near the Predator Ridge turnoff.

Brian Victor Dolman, 64, of Oyama died at the scene when his Subaru failed to completely negotiate a right turn in the road and veered into oncoming traffic.

Still no word what caused the man to lose control of his vehicle.

Two occupants in the other vehicle were also injured. The driver has since been released from hospital while the passenger remains at KGH with non-life threatening injuries.


UPDATE 10:20 A.M 

RCMP Spokesman Gord Molendyk says the driver of a Subaru who died in the tragic crash yesterday south of Vernon, was a 64-year-old man from Lake Country.

The two men in the truck were both from Vernon. The driver, 26, was treated and has since been released from hospital. The passenger, 24, remains in hospital with non- life threatening injuries.

The RCMP and the Coroner Service continue to investigate this crash to determine the cause.


UPDATE 7:00 P.M. 

Highway 97 was shut down as of 2:30 p.m. Wednesday for four hours while officers from Vernon and the North Okanagan Traffic Services investigated a fatal motor vehicle crash.  

"Initial investigation has learned, that a Subaru travelling southbound on Highway 97 appeared to veer left into oncoming traffic and struck a pickup truck head on. The male driver of the Subaru from the Okanagan area died at the scene," says RCMP spokesman Gord Molendyk. "The driver of the truck and his passenger were taken to hospital for undetermined injuries."

NOTS and the Coroner Service are continuing with this investigation.


Update: 5:15 p.m.:

Castanet has received reports that traffic downtown Vernon is grid-locked as vehicles try to head south out of the city.

The road was closed for a period of time at the intersection of highway 97 and highway 6. Traffic is moving slowly up Hospital Hill, however the road remains closed 7 km south of Vernon.

Others say streets through out the downtown remain congested because of the fatal accident on highway 97.


Update: 5 p.m.:

Highway 97 remains closed 7 km south of Vernon. There is no confirmation on how many people were injured in the fatal incident.

There are detours in place via Bailey Rd to Commonage Rd to 25th Avenue back to Highway 97. DriveBC states the next update will be at 6 p.m.


Update: 6 p.m:

Highway 97 has reopened in both directions 7 km south of Vernon.

There is still no word on how many people were killed in the crash and how many others were injured. Castanet will provide an update once one becomes available.


Update: 3:25 p.m.:

RCMP spokesperson Gord Molendyk says emergency crews are on scene of a fatal motor vehicle accident, on Highway 97.

The accident involving a truck and a car happened around 2:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Police are requesting that motorists stay clear of the area so they can investigate the crash.

It is expected the highway will be closed for the next few hours.


Castanet has received several viewer tips of a vehicle incident near the Predator Ridge turn off along Highway 97.

Traffic appears to be moving along Commonage road as a detour.

There is a report that several people are injured.
