Joy ride ends in arrest

Two teens from Lumby may have had a fun night joyriding in a stolen car, but it ended in handcuffs.

On May 29 at about 6:00 a.m. North Okanagan RCMP received a call that the truck had been stolen from the Lumby Arena parking lot overnight.

Earlier in the night, RCMP received a report the same truck was seen at a Vernon Tim Horton’s restaurant and outside a Vernon home.

“At about 4:00 a.m. the same truck was reported as a suspicious vehicle possibly casing a residence along Hwy. 6 but the vehicle fled when the family dog started barking,” explained RCMP spokesman Gord Molendyk.

RCMP tracked the truck and recovered it off Hwy. 6 near Mountain View Avenue, in Lumby where Vernon members were called to a single vehicle collision.

The 16-year-old male passenger was detained on scene but the 17-year-old driver ran.

“He fled on foot from the area and was later arrested for the Possession of Stolen property,” said Molendyk.

Both teens have been released from custody and are expected to appear in court July 10 to face charges.
