New Crime Fighting Unit

The Vernon/North Okanagan Detachment is forming a new street level enforcement unit consisting of three full time constables.

The Community Response Unit (CRU) will utilize three of the four new constables positions recently provided the Detachment by Vernon City Council. Therefore, current resources will not have to be depleted to staff this unit. The fourth new member will join the drug squad already in place.

CRU will be a ‘flying’ squad targeting specific problem areas within the city on both a reactive and proactive basis. The unit will work together wherever the need might arise or emerging crime trends dictate. The problems they tackle may range from traffic concerns to crack houses, property crime to prostitution. The unit will work in either uniform or plain clothes ( marked or unmarked vehicles) depending on whatever ‘hot’ spot they are assigned.

One of their priorities over the remainder of the summer will be local parks and beaches. Their shifts will be flexible to meet whatever the situation warrants.

Although the Detachment has had similar summer enforcement units in the past, CRU will function year round in partnership with existing uniformed and plain clothes police officers in the detachment.
