Mudslide near Salmon Arm

UPDATE Sunday 10:40 a.m.

The mudslide happened just before 6 p.m. Saturday evening.

Luckily there were no homes in the path of the slide, but the road was completely blocked for a couple of hours.

The slide took down dozens of trees, and also knocked out power to area residents. BC Hydro was able to restore power just before midnight.

Mike told Castanet news his sister came across the slide just moments after it happened. She was attempting to return to her cabin, but was unable to get through.

He says the area is fairly remote, but there are a number of cabins and vacation homes in the vicinity.

He adds slides are quite common in the area, but this one had a lot more debris than they are used to.

Saturday 9 P.M.:

A landslide has occurred north of Salmon Arm.

According to emergency crews, the landslide came down on the south side of Shuswap Lake, near 5900 Eagle Bay Rd, blocking the road completely for a time.

It appears that no structures or people were in the path of the slide, but multiple trees and power lines were taken out.

BC Hydro crews are on scene attempting to restore power to approximately 285 homes.
