Iron Chef: cooking for charity
Sep 19, 2013 / 12:35 pm
A group of local women are at it again this week as they prepare to host Vernon’s third annual Iron Chef competition, sponsored by Nixon Wenger.
Mom’s Making it Happen President, Kyla MacAulay, says they are excited to bring this high energy, delicious community event to Turtle Mountain Winery.
“The fabulous venue and the chance to work on behalf of the Family Resource Centre have made this event a joy to create. It’s going to be an outstanding afternoon in the Okanagan,” said MacAulay.
Also co-owner of Gumtree Catering, MacAulay brought Mom’s Making it Happen to Vernon five years ago after witnessing the success of the model in Calgary. She rallied seven other talented local women with the goal to raise funds for a worthy cause within the Vernon community each year.
“We tried some different things the first couple of years, a kids carnival and a Halloween event. But I figured if we were really going to make this work, we needed to tie in our strengths,” she said.
Since 2008, the group has raised thousands of dollars in support of organizations that benefit women and children in the local community. This year, the chosen charity is the Family Resource Centre of Vernon, with proceeds going towards their post partum depression program.
“We are thrilled to be chosen as the recipient of the proceeds from this great event. It’s very encouraging and really validates the importance of the work we do,” says Jan Schulz, Executive Director of the Family Resource Centre.
The Italian Kitchen will face off against Gumtree Catering on September 22. Cocktails by Okanagan Spirits begin at 2 p.m. Tickets are $50 and can be purchased at the Bean Scene, Italian Kitchen, Family Resource Centre, or the UPS Store on 30th Avenue. Tickets are also available online.
