Suspicious death in Vernon
Aug 27, 2013 / 2:00 pm
Update: 2 p.m. - Investigators from the Vernon/North Okanagan Detachment received the results of the autopsy on the man that was found dead in his room in the 2900 block of 41st Ave on Sunday morning. Based on the results of the autopsy and the police investigation, there is no indication that foul play was a factor in this death, and the matter has now been turned over to the BC Coroners Service.
Any further inquiries on the cause of death and the name of the deceased will come from the BC Corners Service.
The Vernon RCMP Serious Crimes Unit was on the scene of a suspicious death at 2902 41st Avenue on Monday afternoon following the discovery of a body on Sunday morning.
Police have released few details on the case, saying only that the cause of death has not yet been established and that several questions remain about the man's movements prior to his death.
Neighbours at the small apartment building describe the deceased, who they refer to as "Chris," as a man in his 70s who was quiet and very private.
"He drank a bit but he never bothered anybody and didn't cause any trouble," said one neighbour, who didn't know the man personally other than to see him around the building.
"It's a tragic incident," he said.
The people who live in the building don't recall anything unusual happening in the past week, but they were all accustomed to seeing the man on a daily basis, so they took notice when he didn't appear for several days.
"This is a pretty quiet place. I didn't hear or see anything strange," said a neighbour by the name of Marvin, who called police after knocking on the man's door several times without a response.
"I'm waiting to hear what the police have to say about it," another neighbour said.
The neighbours did not want to speculate about the investigation, although they said they wouldn't be surprised if it was natural causes given the man's age. The man did have a friend that would visit him regularly, they said, but the friend "wouldn't hurt a fly."
The building is managed by a private landlord in Vernon who owns several rental properties, some of them low-income.

The Vernon RCMP are investigating what they're calling a 'suspicious sudden death' after a body was discovered early Sunday morning.
The deceased was found alone in an apartment unit at 2902 41st Avenue, after having not been seen by neighbours for several days.
Members of the Vernon RCMP, along with BC ambulance and the Vernon Fire Department forcefully gained entry to the locked apartment and found the person inside had been dead for an indeterminable period of time.
At this point the cause of death has not been established and several questions remain unanswered with respect to the deceased’s movements prior to death.
The Serious Crimes unit has taken over the investigation. No more information is being released at this time.
