A five-year-old child is safe after two separate crashes sent three people to hospital with serious injuries Saturday afternoon.
Around 11:40 a.m. emergency crews responded to a collision on Highway 1 west of Salmon Arm.
A pickup truck towing a trailer crashed into the rear of a semi-truck and trailer, both were heading east at the time.
There were three people in the pickup, a man, a woman and a toddler. The child was unharmed, the woman suffered minor injuries but the man, who was driving, suffered serious injuries and was taken to hospital by ambulance.
A witness told Castanet that it took almost two hours to cut the driver out of the vehicle before he was airlifted to hospital.
About an hour later, crews responded to another crash on Highway 1 which involved a motorcyclist and a pickup truck.
A man and a woman were driving eastbound on the motorcycle when they crashed into the pickup truck, which was also heading east.
The motorcyclists suffered serious injuries and were taken to hospital by ambulance. The driver of the pickup truck was unhurt.
The second crash was approximately three kilometres west of the first incident.
The highway was closed for some time while both incidents were cleared.
The investigation into the cause of both crashes is ongoing.
