Rash of thefts from vehicles

Residents of the Middleton Mountain area near Vernon are experiencing a rash of thefts from their vehicles. And in some cases they're making it easy for the thieves.

"We have had in excess of 30 thefts from vehicles or damage to vehicles in that area over the past 10 days," says RCMP spokesperson Gord Molendyk.

He says the very high rate of theft and wilful damage is frustrating not only to the residents but to the investigating officers as well.

"A few (of the vehicles) are unlocked. Some there is damage being done, they've broken some windows," says Molendyk. "The first string seemed to be opening doors that were open and stealing things. Lately they've been breaking windows."

Molendyk reminds everyone to be vigilant.

"Don't leave anything that is visible inside that can be stolen, and that means change, valuables and things like that. People are leaving wallets, briefcases, computers, phones in the vehicles, making a tempting target for thieves."
