6 p.m. update:

The fire near Sugar Lake is estimated at 25 hectares in size.

A ground attack crew is on site and they were initially supported by 9 aircraft, now four water skimmer aircraft remain.

The fire was rated as a Rank 4 - 5 fire with flames candling in the tree tops. At 6 p.m. Saturday forestry had the fire rated as a Rank 2-3, with smouldering ground cover.

3 p.m.: A wildfire has broken out in a forested area north of Sugar Lake east of Vernon.

The fire was reported just before 1 p.m. and is estimated to be about four hectares in size at this time.

Melissa Klassen at BC Wildfire Control said two air tanker teams are responding to the fire, meaning eight aircraft in total are battling the blaze.

"It's in a tricky area and burning in an area heavy with Spruce trees," she said. "An initial attack crew is responding but they are still trying to gain access."

The fire is growing and beginning to burn in open areas she said.

More details to come.
