Contractor van catches fire

A contractor's van caught fire Thursday in Vernon nearly setting a nearby home ablaze.

Vernon Fire Captain Rob Cucheran says crews were called to the scene just after 12 p.m. on Blackcomb Place off Silver Star Road.

“A worker had his van parked in the driveway of a residence under construction and the van caught fire,' says Cucheran.

When crews arrived, the fire was spreading.

“The van was fully involved and it was starting to extend into the home but we were able to stop it from causing any further damage to the home,” says Cucheran. “We were able to put it out with just the water contents of the engine.”

There was damage to the garage door, melted by the fire. Cucheran says the van was a total loss.

The cause is currently under investigation and RCMP and a Fire Investigator are on scene, but Cucheran says it is not looking like it is suspicious at this time.

As it stands they do not believe this fire will be added to the list of now 15 suspicious fires in the Greater Vernon Area.
