Alleged arsonists caught

Two alleged arsonists behind a fire last week have been arrested, but RCMP say they do not believe they are connected with the other suspicious fires in the Vernon area.

The 24-year-old and 30-year-old Vernon men were identified and arrested from surveillance footage taken in an alleyway.

They are being charged for an early morning fire on May 29 behind AJ’s Pets store, Molendyk says footage showed the men throwing something into the recycling pile before they walk away.

Despite this arrest, Molendyk says RCMP are still on the hunt for the person or persons responsible for the other fires in the area.

“We do not believe they are responsible for the other arsons,” said Molendyk. “Indications are that they are likely only responsible for that one.”

Both men have been released on conditions and are expected to appear in court on June 26 in Vernon.
