The list of suspicious fires in Vernon has now grown to double digits.

“When you have this many suspicious fires in the area you have to believe someone is behind it for sure,” says RCMP spokesman Gord Molendyk.

Molendyk says RCMP are not saying there is an arsonist in the North Okanagan . . . at least not yet.

“It is hard to say, we don’t know if they are all different or if it is one or two, or a group of people doing this.”

RCMP have increased their presence in downtown Vernon and they are doing extra patrols to snuff out the fires.

“All of our officers are very aware of what is going on and are very vigilant at trying to put a stop to this,” said Molendyk. “The officers that are working are doing extra patrols in all areas and we have employed a couple officers to work a little later to see if we can put a stop to this.”

Police are looking for help to solve the case and are asking anyone who sees anything suspicious, no matter where, to call right away.

“I appreciate that some of these fires have happened in light-industrial areas where people may not actually be living, however there are taxi drivers out and about, delivery people out and about or people coming home late, if they see something suspicious don't hesitate to call.”

Two more garbage fires early Thursday morning were added to the list of suspicious fires, increasing police fears that someone is going to get hurt.

“We ware working as diligently as we can to put a stop to this before we have a major loss of a building, injury or loss of life,” said Molendyk.

If you have information about these fires call the Vernon RCMP (250) 545-7171, the Vernon Fire Department (250) 542-5361 or Crime Stoppers.
