Police standoff ends peacefully

Police were at a standoff Sunday evening after a 28-year-old man barricaded himself in his apartment.

Around 5:30 p.m. RCMP were called to the scene by neighbours who reported the man had stabbed himself in the leg and was threatening to further harm himself.

RCMP Spokesman Gord Molendyk says the man had barricaded himself in his apt in the 3300 block of 35th Ave in Vernon.

“After a period of time, about 30 minutes, our officers were able to talk him into giving up the knife and coming with them,” said Molendyk.

He was arrested without further incident under the mental health act and transported to Vernon Jubilee for treatment of his injuries that turned out to be very minor. He will also undergo a psych assessment.
