Happy New Year, you're under arrest
A 56-year-old Vernon man who claimed to have taken a large quantity of Valium faces a long list of charges after an early morning chase Tuesday.
Rural Vernon RCMP say they received a report of a domestic assault in the area of Dunwaters Drive on the west side of Okanagan Lake shortly before 4:30 a.m. New Year's Day.
A man had apparently poured gasoline in a portion of the home and threatened to set it on fire prior to police arrival.
He then took off in the family vehicle.
"A pursuit was initiated then called off for safety reasons," says RCMP spokesman, Gord Molendyk.
"Officers set up a spike belt in the area of Highway 97 and Old Kamloops Road which was successful in flattening several tires."
Despite losing full use of several tires the suspect continued on toward Vernon City limits with officers in pursuit. The second pursuit was also called off for safety reasons.
Molendyk says the suspect made contact with a police cruiser on 32 Street and again took off.
The suspect was eventually spotted near Polson Park and, after a brief foot chase, was apprehended.
The man was taken to Vernon Jubilee Hospital for assessment before being lodged in cells.
He was expected to appear in court Thursday morning answering to charges of Assault, Uttering Threats, Failure to Stop for Police, Dangerous Driving, Assault of a Police Officer and Attempted Arson.
