Firefighters kept busy in Vernon

Three residential fires kept crews busy this weekend in Vernon, leaving several residents homeless for a few days.

On Friday December 6, Vernon fire crews attended to a apartment fire just before midnight on 36th Street.

Fire Captain Doug Imrich says fire crews arrived to find a small fire that had been contained to the bedroom; the apartment tenant had closed the bedroom door to minimize spread of the fire.

Imrich says there is no indication of a cause but the investigation will take place this week. The tenant and tenants on either side were put up in a hotel by Emergency Social Services.

On Saturday around noon Vernon fire was called out to 9845 Eastside Road after a neighbour reported seeing smoke coming from a building.

“When crews arrived there was flames and smoke coming from a smaller detached cabin; it was more of a summer residence with out any hydro hookup,” explains Imrich.

He says the fire was put out quickly and it does not appear to be suspicious, the investigation will also take place on Monday.

Vernon Fire was called once more to a another fire around 1 a.m. Sunday morning at 1207 – 28th Avenue.

Crews arrived to find a small fire contained to the ensuite, all four residents had got out of the building safely.
“Again, our crews did and excellent job and knocked the fire down quickly with minimal damage,” says Imrich.

He adds that this fire is not suspicious in nature and it appears that lit candles were the ignition source. The official cause will be determined on Monday.

The family of four was taken care of for a few nights by Emergency Social Services and Imrich says it is hoped they will get back into their home quickly in time for Christmas.
