RCMP bust 16 in drug trafficking case
In a tactical undercover operation called EPACESETTER Vernon and North Okanagan RCMP made a major bust this past September implicating 16 people.
RCMP Spokesman Gord Molendyk says the four day operation was designed to target many of the drug traffickers in the Vernon/North Okanagan Detachment area.
“Our detachment will endeavour to continue to disrupt drug trafficking activities in an effort to prosecute those responsible,” said Sgt. David Evans of the North Okanagan Targeted Policing Unit.
Molendyk says a total of 21 street quantity drug buys of powder cocaine, crack cocaine and heroin were made during this operation.
Police have recommended charges of drug trafficking for sixteen people (11 men and five women) all from Vernon except one in Armstrong from an undercover purchase made there.
Molendyk says it has taken police and officials months to present the cases to the Crown for charge approval.
“Drug use and trafficking is a root cause of a large percentage of crime that affects our local citizens, through ongoing efforts like this we hope to reduce it," added Evans.
Not all charges have been approved but Molendyk says several people responsible have been arrested while several others are awaiting charge approval and/or arrest warrant execution.
Of the 16 people implicated in the bust, 13 have previous criminal records and 10 of them have previous convictions for drug related offences.
