Okanagan RCMP warn they're watching
Oct 29, 2013 / 5:00 am
North Okanagan RCMP were on a mission last Friday night; to check as many vehicles as possible to ensure both commercial and personal vehicles were safe to drive on the road. What they found is startling.
Of the 86 private and commercial vehicles checked, 58 were not complying and were issued charges and instructions. Even more surprising, six vehicles were is such bad condition they were removed from the road on the spot.
“The numbers are high, to see six vehicles taken off the road is high. For us to take a vehicle off the road there has to be a significant violation or a significant safety issue where we feel that we have to have the vehicle off the road for fear of a catastrophic event,” explains RCMP Cpl. Gerry Kovacs.
Most vehicles were given a warning and instructions to have the issues fixed within a certain time period, like a broken tailgate light for example.
Kovacs says this time of year people need to be aware of the condition of their vehicle and prepare for winter conditions as the cold temperatures and snow loom around the corner.
“Slow it down, get with it. Prepare you car for winter, get blankets and winter gear, start-thinking about it, we all need to adjust."
Kovacs has been in the business for 25 years and every year, when the snow hits, he says it's complete mayhem.
So it’s coming, start thinking about it!,” urges Kovacs.
He says you can also expect to see checks like this and roadblocks more and more as the residents of the North Okanagan have requested this enforcement.
“Residents of the North Okanagan have spoke loud and clear that road safety is a priority for them. They want police visibility on those roadways and we will be there, you can expect to see us anytime,” says Kovacs.
He warns, “Our messaging is quite clear, we are on the lookout and targeting roadways so expect to see us.”
