Time for action (fest)

Whether you consider it being the last major event of Spring, or the first Festival of Summer…in the Okanagan, it is time for Action (fest)!!  The annual Summerland Action Festival is upon us.  This first full weekend of June, Summerland celebrates all that is Summer.  Centred around Summerland Memorial Park, and other areas around the city, ActionFest 2015 has something for all family members!  Of course, here within “Under the Lights”-we concentrate on the musical offerings…and there should be no surprise that the music will be rollicking and exciting!

Now, ladies and gentlemen…here’s the music:  Friday June 5th: Rock veterans “The Journeymen” open things up at Memorial Park’s Main Stage at 6pm.  Performing the music soundtrack of all of us Canadian Baby boomers-“The Journeymen” will heat things up early!  The Opening Ceremonies will commence at 7pm on the same stage, with “The Journeymen” returning to the stage immediately after to continue to excite your aural senses.  Around 9:15pm, “Totally Tom Petty” will perform and host the “Women Of Rock”, playing tribute to the likes of Chrissie Hynde, Stevie Nicks, and Pat Benetar!  Be prepared for some surprises as well.  Of course, the Summerland Action Festival is not only for us diehard Rockers, there is music for everyone!  On Saturday, (June 6th), and again on the Main Stage, Matt Dufus will perform music for the whole family beginning at 11am.  Over lunch you can rock it out with “Silent Alarm” beginning at 12:40pm.  The rock continues, and quite possibly more intensely with “The Slam Dogs”—made up of veteran Canadian musicians from the likes of “The Headpins”, and “Prism”!  They will perform a fiery ninety minute set that will land us into the late afternoon.

Continuing with the Saturday line-up, MDM/Universal Recording Artists, “Robyn And Ryleigh” will set to the stage at 3:30pm, and get ready to end the Saturday music festivities with the soulful and funky sounds of “Uptown 10”, complete with a ten-piece Horn Section!!

Now, what better way to wake up on a Sunday with the cool vibes of Jazz and Rhythm & Blues!  That is what will happen on June 7th…and again at the Main Stage..”Jo And The Soul” will provide those cool vibes beginning at 11:30am!  Plus, you can call it Sunday Afternoon Country as Steve Dreger-a “Man Named Sue” gets up and belts out those legendary songs from Johnny Cash!  Steve performs around 12:10pm and runs until just before 1pm.  One of the surprises from this year’s Action Festival will be the acoustic set from MDM/Universal’s “Robyn And Ryleigh”, no doubt creating a very lovely musical Sunday afternoon.  Take in this performance at 1pm, and again at the Main Stage.

Please don’t go too far away from Memorial Park, as Kevin Foley and his Neil Young Tribute will fill the air with sounds from this famous Canadian musician!

Are you in the mood for some deep south “Swamp Rock”?  “Centerfield” takes the stage at 3:45pm with everything John Fogerty…so don’t get caught “Down On The Corner”!—be there at the park to take in all those magnificent songs from this American Icon.  Talking about American Icon’s “Night Moves”, rounds up the Sunday Music entertainment with their tribute to Bob Seger!

All in all, “Summerland Action Festival 2015” will be the place for families this weekend.  The music line-up is above, but don’t forget there is more to this festival, like the Annual Parade on Saturday morning…and of course you cannot have a Festival without a Midway, and this year it is bigger than ever!  Running the full three days, exciting fun for the whole family from music, to triathlons to Slo-pitch and more-the place to be is Summerland!  Remember I mentioned there will be some surprises…well here is another one!  The fabulous Nankama West African Drum & Dance troupe, at Main Stage in Memorial Park on Saturday afternoon beginning at 3pm!!

An outstanding and exciting weekend is upon us—it is time for Action!—Summerland Action Festival 2015—this weekend at Memorial Park, Summerland…
