KELOWNA, BC - Kathleen Deady will join the UBC Okanagan Heat women’s soccer program next season after a successful high school career in Coquitlam. The 5’9” defender is currently the captain of her high school team at Charles Best Secondary, where she and her side took home a provincial championship in 2015. Outside of school she has also played with Coquitlam Metro Ford in the BCSPL for the past five years, beginning with the u13 team there.

“I chose UBCO because of the beautiful and small community-based campus,” explained Deady. “I wanted to be close to home and I also have lots of family in the Okanagan. Athletically UBCO was one of my top choices so both academically and athletically the school has exactly what I was looking for. I’m planning to live on campus and I am excited to be up with two of my other current teammates.”

A member of a successful athletic family, Kathleen has a second cousin, Owen Keys, who will also be coming to UBC Okanagan next season to join the men’s basketball program. University soccer is also evidently in her blood, as she explains, “my three Wallace cousins played varsity soccer for TRU and my uncle was the previous coach for the TRU team.”

About joining the Heat program, Deady is excited to take advantage of the experience of her soon-to-be head coach, Craig Smith. “I am very excited to be a part of the soccer team, I have had great support from my coaches the past years and I can’t wait to learn and grow as a player under coach Craig.”

The feeling is mutual, as coach Smith says “we are really looking forward to working with Kathleen as we believe she has lots of potential.”

Away from soccer, Kathleen works as a lifeguard and spends her time volunteering. “I am currently working as a lifeguard at my community pool and have learned lots from teaching children how to swim and volunteering with recreational programs such as Special Olympics swimming.”

Academically, Deady will look to continue in that same vein at UBCO. “I am very interesting in nursing, but planning on starting in the Arts program.”

There have been six recruits that have signed on to join the Heat next fall. Three players from CMF Football Club, Kathleen Deady (Defender), Erica Reis (Midfielder), and Mackenzie Pfof (Striker), two from the TSS Football Club, Kacee Ougden (Central midfielder) and Jillian Hunt (Centre-back), and a PACWEST transfer in Anastazia Ziros (Defender).
