KAMLOOPS, BC - The UBC Okanagan men’s volleyball team captured the first of two weekend games against the Thompson Rivers University WolfPack on Thursday night in four sets.
The Heat were led in Kamloops at the Tournament Capital Centre by fifth-year player Alex Swiatlowski who finished the game with a game-high 16 kills and 12 digs. Eli Risso continued to lead the Heat defense with 13 more digs to add to his impressive season total of 243.
The Heat have now won six games on the season equaling the win total from 2014/15, their best total since they won eight Canada West contests in 2011/12. They have three matches left to try and set a new record for wins in Canada West, they'll get their first chance to work on that mark against this same WolfPack (2-19) team will be back at it on Saturday night in Kelowna at 7 p.m. in the UBC Okanagan Gym.
The first set was closely contested as the two teams were tied up at 16 a piece as they hit the technical timeout. After a great block from Joshua Harvey and Alex Swiatlowski the Heat gained the advantage at 24-23 although they could not capitalize on the set point that followed. After one of five Alex Swiatlowski first set kills, the Heat would win the first 29-27 after an attack error from the 'Pack.
The home team took advantage of some sloppy play from the Heat and led 16-10 at the technical timeout in the second set. The Heat fought their way back all the way until they tied it up at 21 apiece and then took the lead thanks to a Lars Bornemann kill. The Heat would finish the comeback in the second set with an Ethan Freund ace and win 25-22.
The third set went back and fourth throughout and would go to extra points again. A kill from Randy Grundmann would give the WolfPack a one point lead at 26-25 and then Daniel Eikland rod would put away the third set with a kill to force a fourth set.
UBC Okanagan would finish off the WolfPack in the fourth set 25-21 thanks to great play from middle Joshua Harvey who finished the game with 10 kills, .500 hitting percentage, six blocks, and two aces, scoring 15.5 points.
The team from Kamloops were led by Daniel Eikland rod who had a team-high 15 kills to go along with 11 digs. Randy Grundmann also had 12 kills for the WolfPack in their final home game of the season.
The WolfPack had more total kills then the Heat (56-48) however, the Heat committed eight fewer attack errors (22-30) and hit a better percentage (.190-.183). The Heat also had more total blocks (11.5-6) then the home team.
The win for the Heat men marks the first in the Presidents' Cup, on the men's side, this season. The Presidents Cup is based upon the three Canada West sports (soccer, basketball, volleyball) throughout the year. Thompson Rivers had already won the men's side of this year’s edition of the inter-school competition. UBC Okanagan won the women's side.
