The art of travel

Each individual’s motivation to travel is personal and unique. To some, it is simply a means to visit family to share in creating new memories with people with whom they already share a history.

Some are influenced by their circumstances. Years ago, as a single mother with three small children, the all-inclusive vacation was a beacon of sanity! A chance to relax, unwind and get in touch with the fun, adventurous woman I had once been! I could indulge in some adult conversation and companionship as my children frolicked on the endless golden beaches and ate what they wanted, when they wanted...to their heart’s content. All at a reasonable and affordable cost. The destination wasn’t the feature...simply a means to an escape!

There are those who find that one place that feels like a second home. They return again and again and rejoice in the familiar faces, places and adventures that this particular destination offers them. A safe haven with no unpleasant surprises and a routine that guides them into a blissful relaxation that rejuvenates the soul.

Our current generation is being raised in an ever increasing “global” economy and society. These young people view the world as their oyster and understand that in order to be viable in today’s international workforce they have to embrace the differences amongst our cultures, politics and religions. They look beyond their current circumstances and opportunities and travel to discover the other “pearls” that lay waiting for them. They travel to learn new languages, make international connections, study abroad and know to appreciate and accept those attributes that make each country and culture unique and worthwhile.

There are those who find a favorite “vehicle” with which to travel. A particular cruise line or tour company with whom they bond and trust and use to facilitate their personal exploration of the globe. A reliable guide and trusted advisor to help guide the way and educate them on the diversity and history of the areas to which they travel.

Finally there are those like myself today that use travel as a source to challenge, embrace and conquer pre-conceived perceptions, fears and self-imposed limitations. Your choice in destinations and/or travel styles can allow you to experience both the thrills and discomforts of self-examination and acceptance. My cycle tour through the hills and valleys of Andalusia showed me my resilience and determination to succeed. The smiling, laughing faces of the children of Laos and Cambodia taught me that true happiness is simple and a choice and not indicative of personal wealth or success. The sadness I felt when confronted with the undeniable poverty of the people of India showed me that a simple gesture of goodwill or assistance can indeed make a tremendous difference in another’s life. The beauty of travel is a lovely two-way street. As much as the world reveals to you, you in turn can reveal and learn from yourself.

Travel is indeed an “Art”. However, like art, its beauty and value is in the eye of the beholder. Let 2015 be your year to experience travel in the way that suits you best.
