Heat golfers blaze the course
Oct 18, 2012 / 11:00 am
It was a great start for the UBC-Okanagan Heat women’s golf team during the first day of the 2012 PING CCAA National Championship.
Heading into the second round at the Oshawa Golf and Curling Club, the Heat led the team event by six strokes after posting a combined score of 18-over 162.
Holland College sits second after an opening day 168. Georgian College sits in third place at 178 and the two-time defending champion Durham Lords are in fourth place at 179.
Individually, Jennifer Woods was fourth after a 7-over 79, Jessica Kozak tied for sixth with an 11-over 83 and 2011 CCAA silver medallist Alana Kent is in fourteenth with her score of 88
The round of the day went to Katherine Gravel-Coursol of Lionel-Groulx, Que who broke a course record by shooting a 1-under 71, breaking the course record by one stroke.
On the men's side, the Heat didn't qualify for the team event, however they are making their presence felt in the individual competition.
Cody Bell and Will Deck finished tied for seventh after both shot a 2-over 74 on Wednesday.
Ironically, Bell and Deck finished the PACWEST season tied after four tournaments, and continue to shoot as equals nearly 4,000 kilometres away.
Deck's round included four birdies, three of those on the back as he finished strong.
Kevin Piper from MacEwan University in Edmonton had the lead after day one with a 2-under 70.
The tournament ends on Friday.
