Heat victory a foregone conclusion

The UBC Okanagan Heat women’s golf team two-putted their way to their fourth consecutive provincial title in Chilliwack on the weekend.

The team of Jen Woods (Kelowna), Alana Kent (Calgary), and Jessica Kozak (Kelowna) walked away with the title after winning the final tournament of the gold season at the Chilliwack Golf and Country Club.

“It came as no surprise when the Heat women’s golf team walked away with the provincial championship,” head coach Mike Darnbrough said in a statement Tuesday.

The ladies won all four tournaments this season in the PACWEST division.

Individually, Jen Woods finished second and Alana Kent third in the PACWEST.

“In her first year playing in the PACWEST, Kozak performed admirably but did not complete the minimum number of holes to qualify on the individual leaderboard.”

Douglas College’s Kate Weir locked up the women’s individual championship.

With their championship, the women qualify for the 2012 PING CCAA Golf National Championships, to be held at the Oshawa Golf and Curling Club in Oshawa, Ontario Oct. 15-19.

“They will be working on all aspects of their game this week with the goal of reaching the podium in Oshawa,” says Darnbrough. “The team finished conference play very enthusiastic about attending the upcoming national championships.”

Meanwhile, the men’s golf team enjoyed their best tournament of the year, finishing just four strokes behind the host school, Fraser Valley, for second place, and fourth overall in the season.

Cody Bell (Salmon Arm) and William Deck (Kelowna) both earned provincial all-stars as they finished tied with the third lowest cumulative score of 586.

“The UBC Okanagan men’s team had many very good performances in the 2012 season,” says Darnbrough.
“Although we did not reach the Nationals as a team, there is definite reason for optimism. The results in the final tournament, second place finish, showed that they had progressed as a team, with all players contributing to the cause.”

The Heat men consider the highlight of the year William Deck’s hole-in-one on the fourteenth hole on the final day at the Chilliwack Golf and Country Club.
