Rockets 1st win a nailbiter
Zach Franko scored the game winner with 59 seconds left in regulation time as the Kelowna Rockets edged the Winterhawks 4-3 Saturday, snapping a nine game regular season losing streak in Portland.
Goaltender Jordon Cooke turned aside 43 shots in backstopping the Rockets to their first win of the season.
Saturday's win also avenged a 1-0 loss in Portland the night before.
The Rockets squandered leads of 2-0 and 3-1 before Franko's last minute goal sealed the victory.
Miles Bell scored twice, added an assist and also got into a pair of fights in the win.
Bell's second fight in the final minute occurred when he came to the aid of a teammate who was checked from behind by Winterhawks defenceman Troy Rutkowski.
Defenceman Riley Stadel scored the other Rockets goal his first in the Western Hockey League.
Colton Sissons and Dylen McKinlay each had a pair of assists in the win.
Brendan Leipsic scored a pair of power-play goals for Portland, both with the Rockets two men short.
Tyler Wotherspoon had the other Portland goal.
Portland scored twice with the man advantage on eight opportunities while the Rockets went 0-1 on the power-play.
Kelowna returns home to host the 0-3 Vancouver Giants Wednesday before hitting the road again for a pair of weekend games in Prince George.
