Heat look to replace McGill

The graduation of Meghan McGill has created a substantial gap in the Heat front court, but the team’s latest recruit could go a long way in filling that void. Surrey’s Laura Campbell has signed a letter of intent to play for UBC Okanagan this coming season.

The Fleetwood High grad joins the Heat with an impressive basketball resume including a Best-in-the-West Tournament All-Star nomination, and Surrey Firefighter's Tournament "Dream Team", Surrey All-Star Game, and Team MVP honours. She has demonstrated a strong post presence and ability to finish the play, averaging 20 points and 11 rebounds per game this past season in the Fraser Valley Central AAA Tier I division.

Perhaps even more impressive than her basketball qualifications have been her academic ones. Campbell has maintained a perfect 4.0 GPA since Grade 8, with an incredible 93 per cent average. This dedication to her schoolwork also draws comparisons to McGill, who was named a Canadian College Academic All Canadian this past season.

“I chose UBC Okanagan for many reasons," says Campbell. "I wanted to be a student at a highly respected university, and I was attracted to the smaller campus and the smaller class sizes. I also love Kelowna, which only made it even clearer that academically, UBC O would be a great choice for me.

"On top of that, I loved watching the Heat play this past season, and I could tell that I would absolutely love to be a member of the team. I feel that I could not have found a better fit for myself.”

At UBC O, Campbell will be looking to study Science, before making the move into Medicine as she aims to pursue a career in the pediatric field.
