Owls drop tourney opener

The KSS Owls won't have a chance to play in a fourth straight final at the Interior Savings Western Canada Boys Basketball Tournament taking place at KSS.

A disastrous second quarter sunk the Owls in an opening game 85-63 loss at the hands of Vincent Massey from Winnipeg Thursday night.

The Owls took a two-point lead into the second quarter, but Massey outscored the Owls 25-9 during the second 10 minute period to all but put the game away.

A 21-13 run in the third quarter sealed the victory for the visitors.

Kyle Filewich hit for a triple-double, leading all scorers with 36 points, while adding 23 rebounds and 10 assists.

Donald Stewart added 20 points and 11 rebounds.

Parker Johnstone led the Owls attack with 18 points, eight rebounds and a game-high seven steals.

In other opening day games, Diego Maffia led a balanced attack with 13 points as Oak Bay, the number two team in the province, dumped Marion Graham Collegiate from Saskatoon 85-55.

The number one team in Alberta, Harry Ainley upended South Kamloops 68-51. Brandon Mieklejohn paced the winners with 20 points.

In the other game, number six ranked W.J. Mouat dumped number eight Semiahmoo 88-67.

Harvir Garcha paced with winners with 24 points while Dhivaan Bhogal added 22.

The Owls take to the court again Friday at 3:30 against Semiahmoo.

The semi-finals begin at 5:15.
