Whitecaps get needed win

Midfielder Cristian Techera scored twice and set up two other goals as the Vancouver Whitecaps defeated the Central FC Sharks 4-1 in a CONCACAF Champions League group play match Wednesday night.

Blas Perez and Masota Kudo also scored for Vancouver, who solidified first place in the Championship League Group C with a 4-0-0 record for 12 points. Central FC, from Couva, Trinidad and Tobago, dropped to 0-2-1 for one point.

Midfielder Sean De Silva scored for Central FC.

Techera, whose nickname is The Bug, has scored five goals in group play.

Techera gave Vancouver a 2-0 lead off a penalty kick in the 22nd minute. The penalty was awarded after Perez was hauled down in the box by defender Keion Goodridge, who was given a yellow card.

The native of Paysandu, Uruguay scored by chipping a shot past goalkeeper Jan-Michael Williams, bringing a huge cheer from the crowd of 14,327 at BC Place Stadium.

Techera made it 4-1 Vancouver in the 70th minute, knocking a pass from midfielder Marcel de Jong into the Sharks' goal.

Perez opened the scoring in the 11th minute. Techera started the play by moving the ball across the front of the Central FC net, then dropping a pass back to Perez. The Panama City native made no mistake, shooting into a wide-open goal.

De Silva got Central FC on the board in the 44th minute.

The Sharks were awarded a free kick after Vancouver defender Kendall Waston fouled Darren Mitchell. De Silva's shot from about 20 yards out sailed high into the net over the outstretched arms of goalkeeper Paola Tornaghi.

Vancouver went ahead 3-1 in the 49th minute. Techera feathered a pass across the front of the net that Kudo punched past Williams.

Perez looked to have scored another goal in the second half but the play was ruled offside.

Coming into the match the Whitecaps had already secured a spot in the Champions League quarter-finals playoffs. What Vancouver wanted was to improve its seeding in the knockout stage, which starts early next year.

Finishing among the top four teams means a club plays the second game of the two-match, second-round series at home. The first determination for seeding is points followed by goal differential.

Vancouver has a plus-eight goal differential after the opening round.
