Championship ball in town

Teams from the Canadian College Baseball Conference will converge on Kelowna for their national championship tournament.

The Okanagan College Coyotes are hosting the CCBC National Championship beginning Wednesday at Elk Stadium.

The four-day tournament features the Coyotes, long with league members Prairie Baseball Academy, Vancouver Island Baseball Institute, University of Calgary and Thompson Rivers University.

The host Coyotes finished second during league play with an even 14-14 record. They finished eight games back of league champion Prairie Baseball Academy Dawgs, who finished with a 20-8 record.

The Dawgs also come in as reigning national champions.

The event kicks off Wednesday night with the Home Run For Kids Fundraiser for the Okanagan Boys and Girls Club.

The home run competition begins at 7:30 p.m. at Elk Stadium.

Admission is by donation. Bouncy castles and other kids activities will be set up at the park.

The championship itself begins Thursday.

The host Coyotes open the championship at 7 p.m. against Vancouver Island.

They continue with a pair of games Friday against University of Calgary at 1 p.m. and Thompson Rivers at 7. The Coyotes conclude round robin play against Prairie Dawgs Saturday at 4 p.m.
