Siblings medal at Games

Kelowna siblings Quinci and Liam Birker both earned medals Tuesday at the Western Canada Summer Games.

Pairing up with Darby and Devon Dunn of South Surrey in beach volleyball, the girls won gold and the boys won silver hardware.

Quinci and Darby dominated throughout their match, taking the first set 21-12 and the second 21-15.

“We were a little nervous going into the game, especially watching our brothers,” Quinci said from Fort McMurray. “But we felt good, and played our game."

Meanwhile, their brothers, up against Alberta for the second time in the tournament, lost both sets 21-13 and 21-19.

“We felt good going in. Once we stepped onto the court, the nerves set in,” Devon said.

"It’s hard to control ... we just didn’t have our best game,” admitted Liam.

Elsewhere at the Games on Tuesday, Team BC took gold in both the men’s and women’s 4x400m relays, silver in men’s 3000m, bronze in women’s 400m hurdles and silver and bronze in women's heptathlon.

Hannah Rolfe of Langley sailed over the bar to take gold in women's high jump.

In gymnastics, B.C. picked up more medals in vault, floor, parallel bars, high bar and pommel horse.

In women’s basketball, B.C. powered its way to bronze with a 56-48 win over Alberta, while the men’s team edged out Manitoba for gold.

Team BC women’s cyclists swept the podium, finishing one, two and three. More gold was earned in men's and women's mountain bike competition.

To wrap up the day, every wrestler went home with a medal as Team BC earned 11 gold, nine silver and two bronze on the mats.
