Falcons battered by Sox

It was an old fashioned whooping with a final score that more resembled a football game than a baseball game.

The Wenatchee AppleSox scored nine times in the first two innings and cruised to a 17-7 thumping of the Kelowna Falcons in the finale of their three game series.

The AppleSox, last in the East Division of the West Coach League, took two of three in the series.

Starter Kendall Motes last just two-thirds of an inning giving up six earned runs on four hits and a walk. He also hit three batters.

Jayse Bannister and Jimmy Doyle didn't fare much better, allowing five runs apiece.

The AppleSox pounded out 20 hits led be Jake Hirabayashi who had four hits, a home run and three runs batted in.

Despite falling behind early the Falcons managed to claw their way back to within three runs with a four run fourth inning but gave two of those back in the fifth and were unable to get any closer.

Max Carter paced the Falcons offensively with three hits and a pair of runs batted in while JJ Muno also had three hits and drove in a run.

The Falcons now head to Bellingham for a three game weekend series with the Bells in a battle of division leaders.

The Bells lead the West Division with a 29-16 record while the Falcons top the East Division at 28-16. They lead second place Yakima Valley by 5 1/2 games.

The Falcons took two of three from the Bells earlier in the season at Elk Stadium.

With just nine games left in the regular season the Falcons magic number to clinch the division title is five.
