Rockets complete blockbuster

The Kelowna Rockets acquired one of the top defencemen in the Western Hockey League in a blockbuster trade with the Prince Albert Raiders Wednesday night.

The Rockets sent forward/defenceman Jesse Lees and forward Austin Glover to the Raiders in exchange for defenceman Josh Morrissey and forward Gage Quinney.

Kelowna also sent 2016 and 2017 draft picks to the Raiders as part of the deal.

Morrissey is definitely the centerpiece of the deal.

He was a first round draft choice of the Winnipeg Jets in 2013 and is the older brother of Rockets goaltender Jake Morrissey.

Morrissey won't join his new teammates right away as he heads to Montreal for the World Junior selection camp.

He likely won't join the team until early in the new year.

"We are getting arguably the best defenceman in the WHL in Josh Morrissey says Rockets President/GM, Bruce Hamilton.

"Her's been playing very well for Prince Albert and he made a strong point in Winnipeg's training camp this year. I think we've done something very good for our hockey club. We've lost a couple of really good players in the deal but I just thought we needed to add something to our young defence."

The deal is a departure for Hamilton who normally shies away from making deals like this.

Morrissey has seven goals and 21 points in 26 games this season.

A year ago, he was second in the league in defencemen scoring with 28 goals and 73 points in 59 games.

He will team up with Madison Bowey to give the Rockets the most potent defencemen in the league if not the entire CHL.

Quinney, 19, is in his second season with the Raiders. He has six goals and nine assists in 31 games.

Hamilton also thanked both Glover and Lees for their dedication to the team over the years.

"We don't make a lot of trades and when this came up we knew we would have to give up good players," says Hamilton.

"We gave up two high quality players and people in Jesse and Austin. I think they are going to a team that will be very competitive and they are counting on them to go in and help bolster the line-up."
