Rockets' record breaker

The Kelowna Rockets established a pair of franchise firsts Wednesday during a 3-1 home ice victory over the visiting Spokane Chiefs.

The Rockets won for a 53rd time this season and also collected points number 109 and 110.

Both are records for the Rockets franchise.

The 53 wins breaks last year's mark of 52 while the 110 points eclipses the previous high of 109 set back in the 2002-2003 season.

More importantly the Rockets avenged a 5-1 defeat in Everett the night before and reduced their magic number for clinching the Western Hockey League title to two.

Nick Merkley scored twice for the Rockets while Madison Bowey notched his 17th of the season, two off the club record for goals by a defenceman. Tyson Barrie scored 19 with the Rockets back in 2009-2010.

Connor Chartier opened the scoring for the Chiefs in the first period, however, that was the last puck that would get past Jordon Cooke.

Merkley evened the score on a power-play with just three seconds left in the period then notched what stood up as the winner 85 seconds into the third.

Bowey sealed it with three minutes left in regulation time.

Cooke turned aside 28 of 29 shots he faced as Kelowna outshot Spokane 30-29 on the evening.

The Rockets can move one step closer to clinching the WHL title when they host the Tri-City Americans Saturday night at Prospera Place.
