Rockets take bite out of Warriors

Make it eight in a row overall and nine in a row on the road.

The Kelowna Rockets improved to 2-0 on their gruelling six game East Division swing Wednesday and moved into top spot in the Western Hockey League standings beating the Moose Jaw Warriors 6-3.

The Rockets built up a commanding 4-0 lead by the midway point of the second period but needed two late third period goals to beat back the surging Warriors.

Myles Bell and Nick Merkley in the first, Damon Severson and Bell again, this time shorthanded staked the Rockets to the 4-0 lead.

The home side got two of those back before the middle frame ended and a goal from Scott Cooke midway through the third to pull the Warriors to within one.

Carter Rigby at 15:01 and Ryan Olsen in the final minute sealed the win for the Rockets who are now a league best 11-1 away from Prospera Place this season.

Jordon Cooke turned aside 35 shots improving his record to 18-1-0-2.

The Rockets also became the first team to hit the 50 point plateau and the first to hit 24 wins on the season.

Kelowna, 24-3-0-2, still hold three games in hand on Portland in the race for the overall league lead and five on the Victoria Cougars who sit nine points behind the Rockets in the BC Division.

The Rockets get Thursday off before continuing their six game odyssey Friday in Brandon.

They conclude the road trip with games Saturday (Regina), Sunday (Prince Albert) and Tuesday (Saskatoon) before taking an 11 day Christmas break.

The Rockets will return to the ice Dec 27 at home against the Kamloops Blazers.
