Teddy bears, Rockets fly past Silvertips

The Kelowna Rockets and kids at Kelowna General Hospital were both winners Friday night at Prospera Place.

The Rockets handed the visiting Everett Silvertips just their second regulation loss on the road, 3-1 and treated KGH kids with many hundreds of teddy bears.

Rocket fans, participating in the team's first ever teddy bear toss were forced to wait more than half the game before getting the chance to hurl their bears skyward.

Ryan Olsen delivered the decisive goal 10:55 into the second period on a Rockets power-play, a goal that knotted the game 1-1 and signaled an avalanche of furry creatures.

Olsen with his second late in the third and Damon Severson who blasted a shot off the post and in from the point on a power-play in the first minute of the third also scored for the Rockets. Severson assisted on Olsen's first for a two point night.

Jordon Cooke, the game's second star, stopped 26 shots as Everett outshot the Rockets 27-25.

Friday's win, the Rockets fifth in a row, lifts them to within two points of the WHL leading Portland Winterhawks who fell 5-4 in a shootout in Edmonton.

Kelowna holds four games in hand.

The Rockets host the Kootenay Ice Saturday in their final home game before Christmas.

After the game the Rockets hit the road for the start of a six game in eight day road trip next Tuesday in Swift Current.
