Hockey Canada calls on Rockets Severson

Damon Severson got the call he was hoping for Monday morning.

The Kelowna Rockets defenceman is one of 25 players named to Canada's World Junior selection camp.

Eight defencemen were invited to the selection camp including Mathew Dumba, currently playing with the NHL's Minnesota Wild.

Not on the list of invitees was Rockets defenceman Madison Bowey who took part in both Subway Series games against Russia last week.

The Subway Series is seen as the last chance for Team Canada hopefuls to impress the scouting and coaching staff.

The selection camp will take place beginning Dec 12 at the MasterCard Centre for Hockey Excellence in Etobicoke, ON.

The 25 player selection camp roster, consisting of two goaltenders, eight defencemen and 15 forwards, will be pared down to 22 prior to the start of the tournament Boxing Day in Malmo, Sweden.

It is expected Canada will announce a roster consisting of two goaltenders, seven defencemen and 13 forwards.

“Hockey Canada is looking forward to an extremely competitive camp in December, as we look to assemble a team that will make all Canadians proud,” says Scott Salmond, Hockey Canada’s senior director of men’s national teams and hockey operations.

“This is a first step towards naming our roster for the IIHF World Junior Championship. We look forward to the camp getting underway.”

Severson will miss much of the Rockets six game prairie road trip which begins Dec 10 in Swift Current.

Vernon native Curtis Lazar, a member of the Edmonton Oil Kings, was also named to the selection camp roster.
