Labor Day has come and gone and many of us are ushering the kids back to school and ourselves back into a more predictable work routine. Even people who consistently stick to a regular health and fitness routine can sometimes fall out of the exercise habit over the summer. Like many things in life, getting back to the gym is an exercise in transition after a break in routines. Here are some tips for making the transition a little smoother:

  • Stop feeling guilty

Although guilt can be a great motivator it can also be a hindrance if you use it as an excuse to abandon your healthy lifestyle altogether. Everyone indulges over the summer – life is too short not to. Drop the ‘why bother’ attitude and remember how good it feels to be active.

  • Get excited

Simply deciding to exercise can make you feel good.

  • Set a goal

Even the smallest exercise goal is a step in the right direction. Set goals you know you can reach such as taking a walk after dinner or before work.

  • Follow through

Deciding to exercise is one thing and actually doing it is a whole different story. Motivation can disappear when it comes time to actually start moving. Many of us believe motivation will come to us if we wait long enough. However, motivation is something we create, not something we wait for.

  • Stay motivated

Staying motivated can be the hardest part! Every day is different which means that everyday will present different obstacles for fitting in exercise. Making exercise a priority will help to overcome any obstacle that may present itself.

  • Try something new

Don’t be afraid to try a whole new approach to exercise. Forget about what you think you should be doing and do something you want to be doing. For example, try a new group fitness class, take up yoga or join a bellyfit class. Allow yourself some time to explore different options to find something you enjoy.

  • There is no such thing as being perfect

Exercise is a journey not a destination. Take it one day at a time and focus on what you can do today to reach your goals. If you fall off the exercise wagon, skip the guilt and jump back on. Life is a learning experience and we learn best from our mistakes.

  • Reward yourself!

The key to achieving your goals is to make your reward something you are actually willing to work for. Forget a pat on the back and give yourself something special – you deserve it!
