Osoyoos meeting on smart meters
Jan 12, 2013 / 5:13 am
A meeting focused on health, cost and other issues related to smart meters will be held in Osoyoos on Saturday.
Titled No to Smart Meters, it will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Sonora Community Centre, 8505 68th Avenue.
Retired Osoyoos resident Paul McCavour said he organized the meeting because of ongoing concerns about the issue.
“I haven’t heard anything good about these things,” he said. “In Europe they have installed millions, but they are not wireless they are hooked to low voltage power lines, so that means there is an alternative.”
Guest speaker will be Jerry Flynn, a retired Canadian Armed Forces wireless radio specialist.
Flynn will focus on issues including health , cost, fire safety, security, loss of privacy, grid security and radiation levels..
This meeting comes on the heels of a presentation made by McCavour in November to the British Columbia Utilities Commission on the matter.
The commission is responsible for approving or denying the FortisBC application for the advanced metering infrastructure program known as smart meters, he said.
McCavour hopes the outcome of such presentations and Saturday’s meeting is that the FortisBC application is again denied, as it was in 2008.
“I don’t believe they have made a case these smart meters are safe,” he said.
