A new development is coming to downtown Summerland.

The municipality announced Wednesday it has inked an agreement for the sale and development of municipal land at Wharton Street and Kelly Avenue to Kelowna businessman Dan Nonis.

Negotiations on the sale have been on-going for more than a year.

The development will include four buildings that will house commercial space on the first two floors and residential space on the upper three.

As consideration for the sale, the municipality will receive space in the second building which will house a new museum and cultural space.

Space for replacement of the Summerland Library has been set aside in the first building.

"We believe that this exciting new development will provide some revitalization for our downtown," says Summerland Mayor, Janice Perrino.

"We expect that this will bring new businesses to Summerland and create a vibrant town centre that will benefit all our citizens. We hope the board for the Okanagan Regional Library will join us in this development so that we can create a cultural hub that our community will be proud of."

Nonis' company has been involved with past construction in Summerland including part of the sanitary sewer project during the mid 1990's He has also been involved with construction at UBC Okanagan.

They expect to break ground sometime early in 2013.

The development will be phased over a number of years as each building is completed.
