RCMP in Midway were surprised early Monday morning, after someone tried to burn down the detachment and a police vehicle.

Just after midnight, an officer working inside the Midway Detachment heard a loud noise and saw a bright flash as something appeared to hit the office window.

According to Staff Sergeant Dan Seibel the officer looked outside, saw a man pick up a flaming bottle and throw it at the back of a parked police vehicle.

"The flaming bottle broke and the contents spilled out onto the police truck setting the surface of vehicle on fire."

The Constable confronted the suspect, but the man was able to flee the scene after jumping into a nearby vehicle that was left running.

Police managed take down the licence plate of the fleeing vehicle, but could not initially locate the suspect.

Several hours later, at 7:20 a.m., a suspect was arrested.

A 43-year-old man from Grand Forks is now in custody.

The detachment building and police vehicle received minor damage.

An investigation is continuing.
