Police investigate shooting death

Members of the Delta Police Department are conducting an independent investigation into a death which occurred in Princeton, Thursday afternoon.

An unidentified man was found dead inside his vehicle which was parked behind a Princeton hotel.

According to police, a Princeton RCMP member pulled over a speeding motorist travelling east on Highway 3 about 16 km from Princeton shortly after 2 p.m.

When the officer approached the suspect the vehicle took off.

A second officer from Princeton joined in the search for the driver and the vehicle.

It was located behind a Princeton hotel.

"The two officers parked to approach the vehicle," says RCMP spokesperson, Annie Linteau.

"As they were leaving their vehicles to approach the suspect vehicle a gunshot was heard. The members called for backup and a lone male was found deceased in the vehicle."

Linteau says there is no indication the RCMP members fired their weapons.

"In keeping with the RCMP's commitment to independent external review of cases involving serious injury or death, the Delta Police Department will investigate this incident," adds Linteau.

"The scene has been secured by members from Southeast District Major Crime."

The BC Coroners Service is also investigating the death.
